10k run, done!

10k run, done!

I can’t believe it has taken me a whole month to write about this (well I can, cause I’ve been stupidly busy), but I still wanted to document the occasion.

On Sunday, 18th May I took part in my second 10k race, and my second time at the Bupa Manchester Great Run. One of my main training goals for 2014 was to train for and beat my 10k time from last year.

I’ve been training since the start of the year, though a move to another town meant that I had to give up running with my club and I’ve been training solo ever since. I doubted whether I’d have the willpower to keep it up, but I surprised myself by finding the motivation to keep going.

Not that I needed anymore motivation than the fact that I was doing it to raise money for such a good cause, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The day was gloriously sunny – which was kind of my second to worst case scenario behind torrential rain, as it just meant it was so darn HOT! I was not made to run in 23° heat.

Fortunately I was suncreamed up to the max and had invested in a cap to keep the sun off my face. Plus there were two run-through showers along the way which were heavenly. Despite the heat, I really noticed that my stamina felt so much better than last year, so I think my hours of cross training and all that running up hills definitely paid off.

And I knocked 57 seconds off my time last year to make it in 1:07:54 – I will get below 1:05:00 one day, I WILL!

But most importantly, I managed to raise £250 (plus £30 in Gift Aid, I love Gift Aid!) for Macmillan. I can’t wait to do it all again next year.

This isn’t the only charity event I’m signed up for this year though. Tonight I’m going to be doing a 10k midnight walk around town with my mum for our local hospice, St Ann’s. And I may also have agreed to climb Snowdon in the autumn with my friend.
